Scorpions in the House: A Baton Rouge Homeowner's Playbook

Finding a scorpion in the bathroom at midnight is a Baton Rouge rite of passage — but finding them regularly means your home has entry points and a food supply. Here's why striped bark scorpions come inside, and the strategy that actually keeps them out.

Meet the striped bark scorpion

The most common scorpion in the Baton Rouge area is the striped bark scorpion: two to three inches, tan with dark stripes down the back, and a climber — this species scales walls, rides curtains, and drops from ceilings. Its sting is painful but rarely dangerous to healthy adults; small children and allergic individuals are the exception.

Two behaviors explain most indoor encounters: they hunt at night, and they flatten. A bark scorpion slips under a door sweep, through a weep hole, or around a window frame with room to spare. If it can slide a credit card through, it can get in.

Why they're in YOUR house

Scorpions go where the food is, and the food is other bugs. Crickets swarming your porch light in August are a dinner bell — scorpions follow them right to the door. A home with a cricket or roach problem is a home with scorpion pressure.

Outside, they harbor in anything that holds shade and moisture: stacked firewood, landscape timbers, rock borders, stored lumber, and dense ground cover against the foundation. Every one of those against your house is a staging area.

The two-layer strategy

Layer one is exclusion: door sweeps that actually touch the threshold, sealed weep-hole covers that keep ventilation but stop entry, caulked window frames, and screened vents. Scorpion-proofing is detailed work, but it's permanent — a sealed gap works every night of the year.

Layer two is pressure reduction: treat the prey insects and you remove the reason to come in. Perimeter treatment plus reducing harborage — moving the firewood, thinning the ground cover, fixing the porch light situation — collapses scorpion activity around the structure within weeks.

If you get stung

Wash the site, apply a cold pack, and expect several hours of pain and possible tingling — miserable but self-limiting for most adults. Watch children closely and seek medical care for any severe reaction: difficulty breathing, widespread swelling, or symptoms beyond local pain.

Then treat the sting as the data point it is: a scorpion inside means the barrier has a hole. The inspection finds it.
